A newly-wed couple are silhouetted against a moody sky with a wood in the background as they look into each others eyes.

Deciding on your wedding suppliers can be one hell of a juggling act. You want everything to be just right, but with so many amazing suppliers out there, where do you even begin? As a wedding videographer myself, I would, of course, tell you that finding the right person to film your big day is a really important decision. But I really believe that it is (even when it's not me)!

It’s not just about a great video that captures your day - it’s about finding someone who gets you, someone who you trust to be part of your most treasured moments and maybe someone that you'll barely know is there on the day. One thing's for sure, it's going to go by in a flash. So, you will want something really special that captures the bits you didn't even know happened and something that you will want to watch to relive the day for years to come.

So, let's talk about how to choose a wedding videographer.

To make things a little easier, I’ve put together a short and simple five-step guide to help you find your dream wedding videographer.

Step 1: Find a style you love

When you’re looking at different videographers, you’ll quickly notice that everyone has their own unique style. Some are all about those epic, cinematic shots, almost like a film trailer. Others prefer a more natural, documentary feel, capturing all the genuine, unposed moments.

My style is a blend of both. I love to capture the real, heartfelt emotion of the day without being intrusive, whilst also getting some of those more dramatic, beautiful shots.

However, what matters is that you find a videographer whose style resonates with you personally and makes you feel something. It's a bit like choosing a favourite song - you just know when it's right.

Step 2: Set your budget

Wedding budgets are a bit like a jigsaw puzzle - every piece has to fit! So, once you have an idea of the style you like, it's a good idea to set a budget for your videography (or your photography/videography package). Be honest with yourself about what you can comfortably spend.

A professional wedding videographer is an investment, of course, but you're not just paying for a person with a camera. You're paying for their years of experience, their creative eye, all that editing time, and the care they put into telling your unique story.

Have a look at a few videographers in your chosen style to get a feel for the different packages on offer, then you can work out what’s a proper fit for you.

Step 3: Check their availability

This is a really important one, and it's always a good idea to do this early on. Once you have a shortlist of your favourite videographers, drop them a quick message to check if they're free on your wedding date. It's a simple step, but it saves you from falling in love with a portfolio only to find out they're already booked. I hate saying no to people but it does happen (more than I'd like) so please reach out to your chosen person super early!

To be honest, reaching out early is also a great way to start a conversation. You can see how quickly they respond and get a feel for their personality and communication style.

Step 4: Ask questions and trust your gut

Before you sign on the dotted line, you should definitely have a chat with your potential videographer.

This is your chance to ask any questions you have. Don't be shy! You might want to know about their experience at your chosen venue, how long they've been doing this, or what happens if the weather doesn’t play ball (Scotland is a beautiful place but the weather cannot be relied upon so this bit matters too).

My advice here is to trust your gut feeling. A great videographer is a bit like a new pal who just happens to be there to capture your wedding. You'll be spending a lot of time with them on your big day, so it’s essential that you feel comfortable and relaxed in their presence.

Step 5: Take the plunge and book!

Once you’ve found a videographer you love, whose style fits your vision, whose pricing works for you, and who just feels like a perfect fit, it's time to book them!

A good videographer will have a straightforward process for you to sign a contract and secure your date.

Finding your wedding videographer should be an enjoyable and exciting part of your planning journey.

That’s all there is to it!

I sincerely hope that helps you to understand how to choose a wedding videographer - or at least gives you an idea of some of the things you might want to think about!

If you’d like to chat about your special day, you know where I am. I’d love to hear all about it.
